Envisioned as a self directed project to explore and interrogate the possibilities of digital manufacturing and sustainable design, the next-to-no-waste chair was designed to be CNC routed as a set of 6 from a standard sheet of 18mm Birch plywood. Many iterations were taken to get to a point where the preassembled chair would nest perfectly into the sheet.
Unexpectedly, the functionalism resulted in forms resemblant of some decorative and
early art nouveau/arts and crafts furniture. The nature of the design was also to question decentralisation of manufacturing beyond mass produced furniture and be available as a template to be bought and produced by a local CNC operator and thus further reduce environmental impact of shipping and over production.
